To draw a comparison, Event Industry would rank above Australia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia if it were a country in terms of the size of economy.

With the orientation of nuts and bolts of events execution, the diploma course will emphasize on how to conceptualize an event as per the client goals, what does it take to understand the clients’ needs, how to design an event in given budget and client brief, vendor identification and negotiation, what do you need to do to ensure successful public relations, media management and acquiring sponsorships.

How is it different From Basic Diploma in Interior Design?

We are often asked how this diploma is different From the Basic Diploma in Interior Design and Décor when the participants will still be learning about elements of design, colours, etc. A lot of DIDD graduates also say advanced diploma has digital drawings, design studio, design theory and manual drawing. So what is the difference.

Let us first explain to you why you see similarities. Have you ever tried baking? Milk, self-raising flour and water are the ingredients used to make a bread, and the same is used to make flaky, crispy croissant. Can you call them same? Exactly our point.

In interior design, like any other form of arts, you can’t change the foundation. You will obviously be learning about lighting, elements of design and colour theory. It is the perspective and treatment that will be different. In a nutshell, the difference lies in the kind of spaces you conceptualize, design and draw. Advanced diploma focusses on multi-function spaces and commercial spaces – within residential space, designing a multi-function kitchen will be included. Then, creating commercial/business spaces such as a boutique or a workspace/office space will make the main design projects.

Who should attend the course?

  • Those who have successfully completed the Basic Diploma in Interior Design and Décor, offered by IVS-CEP
  • Anyone who has prior education or experience of design – this could be a bachelors level degree in Engineering, Textile design, Fine Arts, Communication Design or Interior Design
  • Those who are running their Emerging, amateur or practicing Architects who have not studied interior design as part of their academic training but now want to integrate ID in their professional practice
  •  Those who are engaged in Interior Design enterprise or consulting but have not acquired any certification/degree. In addition to the registration form, they will need to submit their portfolio of work
  • Those who want to make a switch in career From one design field to Interior Design.

What are the job prospects?

The field is multi-disciplinary, booming and inviting multiple levels of jobs. With a year-long conceptual and practical training (Basic and Advanced Diploma), you have a fairly solid foundation to start your career. Undertaking an internship or apprenticeship helps in building profile and portfolio, but you can also look at full time or part time jobs or independent projects.
Following titles indicate career directions within the Interior Design field:

  • Residential design consultant
  • Design project administrator
  • Interior Stylist
  • Colour Consultant
  • Real Estate Staging Consultant
  • Draftsperson
  • Visual Merchandiser

If your repertoire of skills and knowledge is really sound, then fields such as that of production design, art production, events and stage design, hospitality, entertainment, tourism and construction are all in demand of people who can conceptualize, visualize and operationalize spaces that they communicate and come to life.

How to Apply?

Apply online by going to Admission Portal on our website. Applicants are required to submit last acquired educational certificate (at least Intermediate or A levels), copy of CNIC and passport size photograph.

You may ask, what is the need when you have so many apps and programmes like Canva? The answer is fairly simple – becoming a graphics designer or concept artist entails more than what any of these apps offer. 12 sessions | 24 hours | Mond, Tues & Fri | 5.30 pm-7.30 pm

Workshop Fee: PKR 25, 000/-

Instructor

Naveed Sadiq

The series of workshops are designed to expand on the practices of diverse indigenous schools of the discipline; Indo-Persian painting Funn-e-Mussawari, known as miniature painting today.

Sadiq is known for his emphasis on deep investigation of the processes, concepts and the form within the realm of Funn-e-Mussawari. His teaching closely draws focus on learning from Mughal pedagogical models and a need to establish a relevance to contemporary teaching styles.

Each session will entail more than drawing on a surface. Participants will delve into the process of observing, sensing, and re-connecting with the self and its surroundings. These connections may take place during preparation of the surface (Wasli paper), in extracting pigments (colours) from natural sources and in the contemplation of the significance of sacred geometry, as an underlying grid, in exploration of composition. The importance of care required for undertaking each step, the contemplation and meditation through material and making; all begin a cerebral,  spiritual and  a visual experience in the form of painting.

The series comprises of three workshops, each focussing on an element or “Usloob”, namely:

  • Siyah Qalam (Siyah = black & Qalam = brush) where the drawing is made from one colour.
  • Lamp black is created through a natural material it is collected through burning a lamp under a terracotta utensil, the soot deposits finest carbon on the inside centre and sides of the utensil. It is collected through a delicate feather and mixed with gum of Keekar (Arabic gum) for making the colour black.
  • Neem Rung (Neem = Partial & Rung = Colour) where the drawing is painted with one or two colours thus getting its name – neem suggests half or partial.
  • Gud Rang, (Gud = Opaque & Rang = colour) where the drawing is painted with a fall range of colour. Gud is from gudla, an Urdu word which means opaque.

Participants will be introduced to the Mughal and Persian painting styles; and will have the choice to select one style for their own painting. Schedule for the second and third workshops will be announced in due course.

Whether it is a job ad, CV, memorandum of understanding, contract, content for the web, anything at all – writing skulls are at the core of it. Obviously, you cannot risk getting the crux or core of your professional communication wrong. For many, despite attending  multiple trainings on communication and business writing, writing an email or simple letter can become hours of staring at a blank screen or paper.

Well, let us say we have been on both sides of the table. We have been troubled by writing a report or minutes of a meeting – we have learned the ropes and know what it takes to overcome the writing problem. Equally important is the fact that we have received a lot of abrupt, wrong, cryptic and even offensive writing in the form of emails, manuals, reports, and applications. Therefore, this course is an extract of our experience, and we want to ease the pain that is caused by writing tasks, and worse, bad writing.

For more objective reasons, this course is a practice-based course. You will be learning about all forms of professional writing, getting feedback on what you write, dos and don'ts of each form, and building the confidence in your writing with the knowledge of grammar, conventions, and ethics.

To be announced, course calendar will be uploaded after Eid.

8 weeks| 16 sessions | 32 hours | Mon & Wed | 11.30am -1.30 pm

Course Fee: PKR 25, 000/-

Instructor

Mr. Imran Ahmed

Of the four skills, speaking and writing are often categorized as “productive” skills while listening and reading are called “receptive.” It may be true in the strictest sense of the words, but we beg to differ. You cannot produce a good quality piece of narrative or creative writing until you are an observant person with careful listening and intensive reading. That is why our creative writing course is different from a lot of other being offered online or in person.

The course aims to develop the basic conceptual understanding and skills set required for writing gripping and appealing pieces of creative expression. Without going into a lot of definitions, the course will engage participants in the act of writing, critical analysis and reading that will help them grasp the most difficult aspect off storytelling: a strong plot. They will also learn about the craft of character development – how to create a well-rounded character while analysing what makes a character flat and boring.

What will you learn?

All participants are expected to achieve following learning outcomes through active and regular course participation:

  • Understanding the concepts of creativity and artistic writing.
  • Understanding of the core elements of a strong plot – what makes it moving, coherent and gripping
  • Ability to identify a good plot and its distinctive features on a review of literary pieces
  • Ability to construct a storyline with a coherent plot.
  • Ability to decide what structure would suit a certain plot.
  • Develop a sense of what character development entails and how it should support the plot of a story
  • Critique and reimagine few famous literary characters to match a defined theme or plot.
  • Develop an original character based on real or imaginative characteristics
  • Develop a critical approach to reading literature and finding inspiration from it for generating one’s own creative style.

What will you write?

It is a practice-based course so together; you will read and analyze texts. You will then be involved in rapid thinking and writing exercises in the beginning, and once you get into the groove, you will be writing your own short narratives (at least four of them) along with developing at least one original character and a plot.

Be ready to read aloud, share what you wrote and express your candid albeit constructive views on your peers’ work. We expect the participants to consider the course as a safe space, meant to bring improvement in the current style, without any fear of judgement, disrespect or reluctance/shyness.

What would you need?

If you are used to of writing on a processor, bring your tablet or laptop along. The venue will have charging sockets and spaces to set them up.

Otherwise, a notebook and pens/pencils are all what you need to bring to the class.

Calligraphy, the art of beautiful lettering is deep rooted in eastern tradition and architecture, particularly associated with Islamic art. Ever since the trailblazing work of Sadequain closely followed Gulgee, calligraphy on canvas done with oil paints in an abstract style became a very popular art expression. Whether you go to a framer’s shop or walk into a hotel lobby, you will always spot a canvas hanging with a Quranic verse or names of Allah and Prophet calligraphed. The question is, has Sadequain made it so deceptively simple that everyone thinks they can do it or is there any technique and application that must be learned to make the canvas look appealing.

This workshop is organized as an attempt to answer this question. Mohammed Kashif Khan, a known name in the art circle of Karachi given his immense contribution in art education focused on Islamic Art, Illumination and Calligraphy. Having established Sareerul Qalam academy to promote calligraphy, Ustad Kashif continues to teach at Department of Visual Studies, Karachi University, Arts Council, IVS and is recently co-teaching a course at Habib University as well. Though a few people know, Kashif Sahab started his journey as a water colourist training under Abdul Hayee and Ustaad Rustam. While he has showcased his art nationally and internationally in group and solo shows, he is also a recipient of Sadquain Award for Calligraphy and Watercolours.

It is this experience that makes Ustaad Kashif a perfect facilitator to coach how to do calligraphy on canvas with mixed media. Join the workshop if you want to learn how to get the composition, colour combination, colour application and thickness, and the overall affect of your art piece right!

The medium and its scope for experimentation and expression spoke to her, and the rest, as they say, is history. She has been teaching and practicing printmaking since 1999. She has made immense contributions in evolving printmaking techniques, introducing indigenous and inexpensive materials, and above all, making it a means of visual expression of self, context and imagination.

In addition to the facilitator, Nurayah, the uniqueness of this workshop lies in the process she plans to share. In learning the dry-point technique, Nurayah will engage participants in a collaborative journey of mark making towards self-exploration and expression, which will culminate in creating an artwork that speaks to the individual but also to the collective. Nurayah will facilitate the participants in visualizing the imprints of their own self, within and without. Part II: 4.00pm -5.00pm                  Raku Firing

Workshop Fee: PKR. 4,500/-

 Instructors

Many of us think that pottery is just about making things out of clay. We are sadly mistaken – it is as much as an art as it is a science. Preparing a glaze, getting kiln to heat up to a certain temperature, testing and retesting the impact of high or low temperature on the texture of pottery, viscosity and effect of glaze; all these processes require precision, a lot of reading  and endless practice.

Glazing and Raku Firing workshop is to give you a sense of what goes behind working on pottery and ceramics. And of course, it is aimed as a precursor to our 2 month short course on Ceramics (planned for July/August 2022). This is a 3-hour workshop split into two parts.

In the first two hours, participants will be given a demonstration on how to glaze a pottery ware. Following that, they will be engaged in glazing; each participant will be provided two hand made bisqued pottery ware. Which

After the process is done, the participants will work with the instructors to load the kiln. And then begins the process of heating the kiln and bringing it to the right temperature for Raku Firing to take place.

The second part of the workshop will start at 4.00pm as it takes a good three hours for the kiln to reach the required temperature with constant monitoring. Participants will complete the thermal shock process by dipping their pieces in sawdust. Once Raku firing is complete, carbon and sawdust will be cleaned to  have the finished glaze Raku pottery ready for the participants to take home.

What will you do between 1pm to 3pm?

  • Obviously, we don’t expect you to stare at the kiln while it is heating up. So here are your options to use up the wait time:
  • You can sign up for the C for Calmness,  C for Clay workshop (organized between 2-4pm at a discounted fee of Rs. 2500)
  • You can roam around the campus and grab a bite at our canteen or say your prayers
  • You can go home (if you live close by) or run errands and come back at 4pm.
  • If you are interested in IVS’s Undegraduate programme, you can register yourself for the Open House and get to know about different departments, student life, fee and other admission details. Applications for Jan 2023 are now being accepted so Open House will be most useful.

Who can attend this workshop?

Anyone and everyone above age 16.  Enroll to explore and experience working with glazes and Raku firing. This workshop is a pre-cursor to a 2-month short course at IVS-CEP. If you enjoy this workshop and want to learn more, you’d have this avenue available
